Negative interaction patterns which are automatic or habitual in nature may occur between parents and their children. Mindfulness is one potential way to combat these negative behavior patterns in parenting. Parents who are more mindful may respond differently to their children than do less mindful parents because they are more likely to be aware and able to focus their attention on internal states, or because they are more likely to respond to what is occurring in the present moment, rather than relying on past interaction experiences. Mindfulness may increase a parent's likelihood of choosing positive, rather than harsh or inconsistent, parenting behaviors because they are better able to regulate emotions and focus on the present moment. The present study examined whether mindfulness was related to the use of harsh, inconsistent, and positive parenting behaviors in a sample of 104 parents of young children between the ages of 3-5. In addition, the study addressed possible pathways of the relations between mindfulness and parenting behavior, through either parental flooding with emotion, or child responsible cognitive attributions. Results indicated that mindfulness is positively related to positive parenting behaviors, and negatively related to inconsistent and punitive parenting behaviors. Additionally, parental flooding with emotion was found to mediate the relation between mindfulness and inconsistent parenting behaviors. Other proposed mediational pathways were not supported. These results allow us to better understand mindfulness based intervention studies for parent-child relationships, as well as potential mechanisms of mindfulness. Future studies may further elaborate on mechanisms of mindfulness, and the efficacy and effectiveness of clinical intervention studies for parents which include mindfulness components
