The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the self-perceptions of cultural competence of Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (PRTRP) accredited academic program students who were completing their internship with regard to their ability to design, implement, and evaluate recreational services for culturally diverse populations. It also attempted to describe the factors they perceive to have contributed to their abilities in their curriculum in the areas of knowledge, awareness and attitudes, and skills. Although the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (COAPRT) has provided an accountability structure to assess student abilities addressing cultural diversity, we know little on how to do this effectively and to understand if programs are addressing the diversity curricula for future PRTRP professionals based on projected U.S. demographics. Curriculum development should be a combined effort driven by societal trends, evidence based research, and input by all stakeholders, which includes accreditation agencies, faculty who develop and teach in the curriculum, and students who complete the courses in the curriculum. This research was conducted using a descriptive approach employing an online survey design to examine the self-perceptions of cultural competence of PRTRP academic program student interns. The following are key findings in this study. 1) The interns’ perceptions indicated a need for more information in the curriculum addressing a broader variety of diverse populations. 2) The interns’ perceptions of confidence in their ability to design, implement and evaluate services to culturally diverse populations was lacking in some areas indicating room for improvement. 3) The majority of PRTRP interns rated their course work favorably with regard to the curriculum. 4) The majority of the intern respondents felt that most of their knowledge came from their own personal experience, followed by their major course work. 5) The Spearman’s rho correlation analysis confirmed a moderate positive relationship between the students’ self-perceptions of adequate preparation on cultural competence, and the number of required courses in the major concentration curriculum related to cultural diversity. The results of this study have contributed current and significant student input toward the efforts of continuous improvement to PRTRP undergraduate academic program curricula
