Introduction: Elite athletes face unique challenges, often experiencing injury at higher occurrence and severity rates than non-elite athletes. Little is known about the unique experience of elite female soccer players. Currently, only one study was found on injury in elite women's soccer; therefore, additional research is needed to understand this phenomenon within this population. Methods: Using Constructivist Grounded Theory, this study aimed to understand what elite female soccer players' experiences were after injury by considering both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that impact an athlete's response to injury. Journals, memos, supervisor consultation, and a co-coder were used to ensure trustworthiness. A qualitative analysis program (NVIVO) was used to analyze the data. Results: Six participants were recruited for this study. Six themes emerged from the data: Making Sense of Injury, Significance of their Athletic Identity, Adjusting to Modified Roles and Responsibilities, Minimizing Injury and Choosing to Play, Availability of Helpful Resources for Recovery, and Feeling Worried About Reinjury. Seven subthemes included: Becoming aware of Injury, Concern for Loss due to Injury, Managing an Increased Number of Responsibilities when Injured, Feeling Isolated or Alone During Recovery, Determination and Goal-setting, Impact of Support System Throughout Recovery, and Importance of Mental Health Services. Discussion: This is the first study to empirically assess the application of Wiese-bjornstal's (1998; 2014) Integrated Model of Psychological Response to Sports Injury and Rehabilitation, with elite female athletes. Results suggested that the model could be used to understand many aspects of elite female soccer players' experiences of injury. Results also indicated that further research is needed to explore emergent themes that were not included in Wiese-Bjornstal's model, including re-evaluating the role of athletic identity within the sense of self and concern about reinjury when returning-to-play. Findings from this study provide a foundation for additional research on injury in elite women's sports. Results from this study have implications for helping providers to play an important role in reducing distress and improving the recovery experience by gaining a deeper understanding of the unique challenges injured female soccer players face
