A unit on geometry and fractions was implemented in a kindergarten classroom in a suburban school in a major northeastern city. The class is composed of 15 students, 7 male and 8 female. Two students are non-English speakers and receive ESL (English as a Second Language) services, and one student is below grade level and receives multiple services
The unit is approximately fifteen class days and contains six major content goals. The overall goal of this unit is for students to demonstrate their understanding of shapes and the various ways they can be divided. The focus of the unit will be for students to develop a strong understanding of plane and solid shapes, as well as symmetry
The students will apply the concepts in this unit to design and fill a pizza order made out of play dough. Students were told that many teachers requested specific pizza orders that they will prepare. The specifications for the design challenge were: The pizza must fit into the box (it can not be too big or too small), the pizza must be created in one of the four plane shapes, and the pizza must be divided into a correct fraction by use of a line of symmetry. The project constraints are: the students can only use materials provided for them in the classroom, must be completed within 2 class periods (2-30 minute periods), and the pizza must follow the order placed by a teacher in the building
Students had never completed a design project before and were very excited for the experience. They appreciated the new style of learning math and were very enthusiastic about participating throughout the unit. Hands-on units are important in every grade to ensure student learning. In order for the students to internalize the concept we are asking them to understand they must be actively involved and participating. The mastery of the learning objectives in this unit was evidenced by their design challenge and test grades
The unit also focuses on changing student attitude toward math. By the end of this unit students understood the importance of mathematics in their everyday lives; developed ownership and self pride towards their work, and became more enthusiastic about mathematics. I measured the improved students' attitude by administering a pre/post assessment/interview and observations in a teacher journal
At the conclusion of the unit students' knowledge of geometry and fractions improved. Students demonstrated a strong understanding of shapes and symmetry and the understanding of how to divide a shape equally
