Decision aid use is a significant issue for information systems developers and researchers because lack of use defeats the purpose of the best decision aids available. Despite the importance of this issue and the considerable resources that have been devoted to its study, much remains unknown about when and why users will or will not use decision aids. A major reason for this is failure by existing research in identifying additional key variables that might provide valuable insight on decision aid use. The current study hopes to fill this gap by identifying a key variable to facilitate understanding on a research area that has received extensive attention
The objective of this dissertation is to demonstrate the role of motivation in explaining lack of decision aid use. The current study decomposes motivation into two key components---the individuals' motivation to perform the given task and their motivation to use the decision aid. An overall research framework is proposed, and a test of the core constructs in the framework was conducted. Specifically, an experiment was carried out to examine how task motivation affected the users' motivation to use the decision aid and their decision performance. The experiment also tested for interaction effects between task motivation and the decision aid perceptions of accuracy and speed on the users' motivation to use the decision aid
In a laboratory setting, subjects used a computerized decision aid to perform two tasks---apartment selection and career (grocery store) selection. Subjects were randomly assigned to eight experimental conditions. The statistical results indicate positive relationships among task motivation, motivation to use the decision aid, and decision performance. However, task motivation did not interact with the decision aid perceptions of accuracy and speed to result in a significant impact on the users' motivation to use the decision aid
