The work is an examination of the changes in the relations of production of popular music due to technological change, and the experience of technology and technological change by composers and musicians. The way technology affects the creation, composition and realization of popular music is investigated via interviews with professional and amateur musicians, producers and recording engineers. The critical issues this work addresses are; the effect the musical equipment industry may be having on musical creativity by restricting the number of decisions available to the user of electronic musical equipment, whether or not the relations between musicians, producers and recording engineers are changing as technology changes, what the experience of technology is for musicians and composers, and if technological change has a profound, yet perhaps unnoticed effect on musical creativity. It also addresses questions of technological change and access to music, as well as the changing concept of copyright
