This EPP examines the problem of EdD coursework not having sufficient connection to the work that EdD students will eventually assume as leaders of school districts or other educational systems. It reviews literature critical of EdD programs and websites of educational administration professional organizations with recommended curriculum for EdD programs. Interviews with system level leaders provide information on real-life responsibilities and demands of their jobs. Interviews with EdD students and recent graduates tell their views on the preparation they received at the University of Delaware to take on system level leadership positions. As a possible solution to the problem, this EPP offers two "field-based learning experiences" (FLEs). The implementation of FLEs such as these can help strengthen the practical training aspect of an EdD program and more closely link coursework to professional practice
