The thesis, The Professional Formation in Accountancy in Universities Facing Market Needs: A Comparison of Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese Cases, has focused on a comparative study of the curricula of universities in these three countries and on what the market expects from the professionals these universities prepare. The core objective of this analysis is to identify if the professionals majored in Accountancy in Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese Universities are prepared, according to the variables of knowledge formation and general behaviour; variables of knowledge of professional formation; variables of evaluation of competence; variables of acquisition of professional experience and variables of continuing formation, established by the ISAR/UNCTAD and IFAC, in order to work in a globalised market. This thesis aims to achieve two objectives detailed next. On one hand, following a critical perspective, this investigation offers a contextual analysis of the professional formation of the accountant and the market where s/he works. In the first part of this thesis, which has a theoretical aspect, an introduction to the study of university teaching in general and specifically Accountancy teaching is made. Furthermore, a contextual analysis of Accountancy teaching in Brazil, Spanish and Portugal is presented. This first part of the thesis is finished with a theoretical construction of the contemporary accountant formation and the work market relations with university teaching. In the second part of the thesis, the empirical part of the work is investigated, presenting a multiple case study with multiple unities via a quantitative investigation, aiming to analyse comparatively the information in the university documents and in the questionnaires answered by the professionals. The results obtained with the empirical studies are deeply discussed in the conclusion chapter, contextualising the objectives established.
