There is a problem in corporate America: the increasing demand on organizations to offer telecommuting options to employees, posing unique challenges to businesses such as maintaining privacy and security of company data, offering training programs for teleworkers, and monitoring the productivity levels of such associates as compared to their peers in traditional, onsite work environments. The purpose of this study was to explore data about the challenges XYZ Company business units face in offering telecommuting opportunities to their employees. The theoretical framework was based on generational theory and transformational leadership theory, which assisted in understanding the dynamics of these challenges. This qualitative case study explored current telecommuting challenges with 10 employees from XYZ Company in Western Michigan. Data was gathered through questionnaires with managers, human resource team members and teleworkers. Data focused on the challenges perceived by teleworkers, supervisors, and human resource team members on associate engagement, productivity, and supervision of teleworkers. This research identified themes that represent the challenges involved in supervising teleworking staff and assisting leaders in developing effective methods for dealing with these challenges. This study is important to both XYZ Company and other companies that offer telecommuting opportunities in order to better understand and overcome the challenges that managers experiences with teleworkers
