Stampen 502 Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2003 520 This study evaluated a college preparation program for students from under-represented groups in higher education to help the program staff improve its effectiveness and increase positive impact on student participants. The program's effectiveness and its impact were evaluated based on an evaluation model (Umbrella Model) that was developed by synthesizing the literature, and the model generated components that are known to be effective. The model also was used as the conceptual framework for this study, especially to emphasize the needs of the student participants 520 Two research questions were asked: (1) To what extent does the program reflect the components of the Umbrella Model for college preparation programs that are known to be effective? (2) What is the impact of the program on participating students? To answer these questions, two survey questionnaires were developed based on the model; one is for students and the other is for teachers and staff. Data were collected from the questionnaires for students and teachers/staff of the program, and analyzed to see the program's implementation of the components of the model and impact on student participants 520 The analyses show that, overall, the evaluated program has successfully implemented most components of the Umbrella Model, but with a few exceptions. There are a few components that the program needs to improve or develop including parental encouragement and involvement, students' academic preparation, saliency of sponsoring institution, and having a mentor program 520 In addition to the findings, recommendations were made for program practice including better communication between teachers and staff, program evaluation by students, and a more respectful attitude of the program staff members toward research 590 School code: 0262 650 4 Education, Higher 650 4 Education, Administration 690 0745 690 0514 710 20 The University of Wisconsin - Madison 773 0 |tDissertation Abstracts International|g64-08A 856 40 |uhttps://pqdd.sinica.edu.tw/twdaoapp/servlet/ advanced?query=3101271 912 PQDT
